The Benefits of the GDSN

by Innovit Corporate Affairs | June 6, 2018 | Blog

There are 195 countries (independent states) in the world. The vast number of different states makes international trade a complex business. But the trading of global data between all of those countries is even more complex.

Without a standardized system, sharing information about products between 195 independent states would be complete chaos. But thankfully, there is a system in place that minimizes this issue and helps buyers and suppliers keep on top of every item.

Read on as we learn more about the GDSN and its benefits.

What is the GDSN?

GDSN stands for Global Data Synchronization Network.

And that is a very accurate summary of what it is. An Internet-based network that allows the synchronization of data on a global scale. At its core are the GS1 standards that set out a standardized system in 3 main areas.

Firstly there are standards for the identification of products, setting out information about the product, location, consignment number and so forth. Secondly, it ensures a standardized way of capturing that information, using barcodes or RFID. And finally, it sets out standards for data exchange, with the GDSN as the method for the transfer of master data.

The upshot of all of this is that everyone who is on the GDSN is using the same set of standards. It means that in terms of their data, no matter what country you are in you are always speaking the same language.

There is a range of certified data pools that can be accessed via the GDSN allowing users to find the best fit for their business.

What are the benefits of the GDSN?

The standardized nature of the GDSN allows the data to be updated in real-time.

So if a change is made in Timbuktu, that information is immediately updated around the rest of the world. This means that a package, and information about that package, can be tracked in real time wherever it is on the planet.

The GDSN removes the need for manual processes as a product moves around the globe which means it is far less likely that there will be errors in the processing. And of course, a reduction in manual processing means a reduction in costs.

The GDSN is also perfect for industries such as food and healthcare where traceability is key. Removing processing errors leads to an increase in healthcare safety and efficiency.

And of course, access to accurate, up-to-the-second product information builds an enormous amount of consumer trust.
