What is GDSN?

The Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) is an interconnected network of interoperable data pools and a central registry (the GS1 Global Registry) that allows organizations to exchange product data with their trading partners using GS1 standards.

GDSN’s Role in Healthcare

GDSN allows medical device manufacturers to synchronize standardized and validated product data to distributors, GPOs, and providers via a network of certified data pools including 1WorldSync, atrify, GHX, NPC, and Syndigo.

Product Data Exchanged via GDSN

GDSN enables the exchange of key product data including GTINs, product descriptions, packaging hierarchies, dimensions, storage requirements, and clinical attributes.

How GDSN Works

GDSN uses a publish-subscribe model where manufacturers publish validated product data via a certified data pool, and trading partners subscribe to receive the data via their own data pool. This ensures that every trading partner receives the same validated product information.

Benefits of GDSN

Faster Item Setup & Time-to-Market

With GDSN, device manufacturers and suppliers publish validated product data once, enabling hospitals and distributors to onboard items faster with fewer manual corrections.

Streamlined Supply Chain Operations

Accurate product dimensions, weights, and packaging hierarchies shared via GDSN reduce costly operational issues such as shipping errors, incorrect receiving, and invoice disputes.

Improved Patient Safety & Clinical Accuracy

GDSN enables clinicians to have immediate access to manufacturer-validated product data, such as latex content, MRI safety, and expiration dates—reducing medical errors and enabling rapid recalls across the hospital network.

Meeting FDA GUDID and GDSN Deadlines:
A UDI Compliance Success Story

“We were at risk to miss the UDI Class II deadline of September 2016 and our team in Australia suggested Innovit. After an extensive RFP process involving numerous solutions, the path forward was clear.

Within eight months from project kick-off, we were able to submit data to the FDA’s GUDID system, while meeting the GDSN MJR3 May 6th deadline.”
