swissdamed Timeline Explained: Key Dates, Implementation Milestones and Deadlines

This guide is for medical device and IVD manufacturers, Swiss authorized representatives, system and procedure pack producers, and regulatory teams that need to understand swissdamed regulatory timelines.

This guide focuses specifically on the swissdamed device registration timeline, including the voluntary registration period, the July 1, 2026 mandatory start date, the December 31, 2026 transition deadline, immediate-registration requirements for certain vigilance cases, and later Master UDI-DI milestones. It does not cover swissdamed data requirements, UDI assignment or labeling rules, submission methods, CHRN registration procedures, or detailed regulatory exemptions.

Introduction

Switzerland has entered the mandatory phase of device registration in swissdamed, the Swiss database on medical devices.

Unlike some UDI implementations that phase requirements in according to device risk class, the swissdamed registration timeline centers on a common mandatory start date and a defined transitional period. Device, system, and procedure pack registration became mandatory on July 1, 2026, with a general transition period through December 31, 2026.

However, not every device follows exactly the same timeline. Devices associated with certain vigilance reports must be registered immediately, while products subject to later Master UDI-DI requirements have separate dates.

Understanding these distinctions is essential when determining when a device must actually appear in swissdamed.

swissdamed Voluntary Registration Timeline

August 2024: Actors Module Goes Live

The first major swissdamed milestone came in August 2024, when the Actors module became available for the registration and management of economic operators.

Economic operator registration itself was not new at this point. Switzerland had required applicable economic operators to register with Swissmedic since November 26, 2021. The August 2024 milestone moved this process into swissdamed, laying the foundation for the subsequent introduction of the device registration module.

August 2025: Voluntary Device Registration Begins

The next major milestone arrived in August 2025, when Swissmedic made the UDI Devices module available.

From this point, devices, systems, and procedure packs could be registered in swissdamed voluntarily.

The voluntary period provided approximately 11 months between the launch of device registration and the mandatory registration start date.

It also expanded over time. For example, registration of legacy devices became available in February 2026, and additional registration capabilities were introduced ahead of mandatory compliance.

Key Takeaway

Device registration became available voluntarily in August 2025, giving economic operators an advance period to begin registering products before the mandatory requirements took effect.

swissdamed Mandatory Registration Timeline

July 1, 2026: Device Registration Becomes Mandatory

The central date in the swissdamed timeline is July 1, 2026.

From this date, registration became mandatory for applicable devices, systems, and procedure packs placed on the market in Switzerland.

The requirement applies to devices under Switzerland’s current medical device and IVD legislation and also reaches certain legacy devices when additional units continue to be placed on the market after the mandatory registration requirement takes effect.

This is an important distinction: the swissdamed rollout is not staggered by device risk class. Manufacturers should therefore not look for separate Class III, IIb, IIa, or Class I registration dates comparable to some other UDI implementation schedules.

Instead, July 1, 2026 is the common mandatory starting point, subject to the transition period and specific cases discussed later in this document.

Key Takeaway

Mandatory swissdamed device registration began on July 1, 2026 across the applicable device scope rather than through separate risk-class deadlines.

swissdamed Transition Period Timeline

July 1–December 31, 2026: General Transition Period

Although device registration became mandatory on July 1, 2026, Swissmedic established a six-month transition period.

Devices, systems, and procedure packs subject to the registration requirement must generally be registered in swissdamed by December 31, 2026 at the latest.

This transitional period is particularly important for products already on the Swiss market.

Devices, systems, and procedure packs placed on the market before July 1, 2026 must also be registered by December 31, 2026 when additional units of those products continue to be placed on the market after July 1, 2026.

This creates a simple two-date structure:

  • July 1, 2026 establishes the mandatory registration requirement.
  • December 31, 2026 is the end of the general transitional period for completing applicable registrations.

Key Takeaway

July 1, 2026 is the start of mandatory device registration, while December 31, 2026 is the critical completion deadline under the general transition period.

Vigilance Registration Timeline

From July 1, 2026: Immediate Registration for Certain Vigilance Cases

One important exception to the general transition period took effect on July 1, 2026.

Devices, systems, and procedure packs associated with a reportable serious incident, field safety corrective action (FSCA), or trend must be registered in swissdamed immediately. The general transition period through December 31, 2026 does not apply to these cases.

Swissmedic states that this requirement applies to relevant devices placed on the market since May 26, 2021, IVDs placed on the market since May 26, 2022, and certain devices placed on the market under the former Swiss medical device legislation since May 26, 2017.

This means a device that might otherwise fall within the general 2026 transition period can become subject to an earlier registration requirement if a relevant vigilance event occurs.

There is also a specific consideration for legacy devices. When the same device has already been registered under the current legislation, an additional legacy-device registration is generally not required unless the vigilance case relates to the legacy device but not to the corresponding device registered under the current legislation.

Key Takeaway

From July 1, 2026, a relevant vigilance event can eliminate the general transition period and trigger an immediate swissdamed registration requirement.

Master UDI-DI Registration Timeline

Certain highly individualized devices follow additional dates because Switzerland is implementing Master UDI-DI requirements.

November 9, 2026: Contact Lenses

For contact lenses subject to the Master UDI-DI requirement, mandatory registration in swissdamed begins on November 9, 2026.

This includes applicable standard and made-to-order contact lenses.

A transition period applies, meaning the required swissdamed registration must be completed by December 31, 2026 at the latest.

November 1, 2028: Spectacle Products

A later milestone applies to:

  • spectacle frames;
  • spectacle lenses; and
  • ready-to-wear reading spectacles.

For these products, the Master UDI-DI requirement, and therefore the corresponding mandatory registration requirement in swissdamed, begins on November 1, 2028. The applicable registrations must then be completed by December 31, 2028.

These dates are important because they sit outside the main July 1–December 31, 2026 swissdamed transition window.

Key Takeaway

Master UDI-DI creates separate registration milestones: November 9, 2026 for applicable contact lenses and November 1, 2028 for applicable spectacle products, followed by year-end registration deadlines.

swissdamed Timeline at a Glance

The major swissdamed implementation milestones can be summarized as follows:

Which swissdamed Date Applies to Your Device?

For most manufacturers and authorized representatives, determining the applicable timeline can be reduced to four questions:

  1. Is the device being placed on the Swiss market on or after July 1, 2026? Start with the mandatory registration requirement and the general transition period ending December 31, 2026.
  2. Was the device already on the market before July 1, 2026? Determine whether additional units continue to be placed on the market after that date and therefore require registration.
  3. Is there a reportable vigilance event? If a serious incident, FSCA, or trend triggers the applicable requirement, immediate registration may be required rather than relying on the general transition period.
  4. Is the device subject to Master UDI-DI? If so, determine whether the separate 2026 or 2028 registration timeline applies.

Conclusion

The swissdamed device registration timeline is considerably more concentrated than UDI implementation schedules based on staggered device risk classes.

The central milestone was July 1, 2026, when registration became mandatory for applicable devices, systems, and procedure packs placed on the Swiss market. A general transition period allows applicable registrations to be completed through December 31, 2026, but certain vigilance cases require immediate registration without that transitional period.

Separate milestones apply to products subject to Master UDI-DI requirements, beginning with applicable contact lenses on November 9, 2026 and extending to applicable spectacle products beginning November 1, 2028.

For most manufacturers and authorized representatives, the two dates to remember are therefore July 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026, while vigilance cases and Master UDI-DI devices should be evaluated separately to determine whether a different registration date applies.
